Plan the material room by room
A renovation goes smoother when the material is decided before the carpenter starts. Here is what a typical Delhi home needs, room by room.
Modular kitchen
- Cabinets: 18mm or 19mm BWR plywood.
- Sink cabinet: BWP plywood or WPC board; this is where most kitchens fail first.
- Shutters: plywood or HDHMR, with laminate or acrylic.
- Finishing: liner inside, edge band on every edge, waterproof adhesive near water and heat-resistant adhesive near the hob.
- Hardware: hinges (stainless steel near the sink), heavy-duty channels for utensil drawers. See the hinge and channel picker.

Wardrobes and lofts
- Body and shutters: 18mm or 19mm plywood: MR in dry upper-floor rooms, BWR on outer walls and ground floors.
- Shelves: 12mm for short shelves, 18mm for long or heavy ones.
- Back panel: 6mm.
- Lofts: 18mm base; a lighter pine plywood is easier to fix high up.

Beds, TV units and study tables
- Bed top and frame: 18mm or 19mm plywood, or block board for large tops; 12mm for the box bottom.
- TV unit: 18mm plywood cabinet; MDF or HDHMR for designer back panels.
- Study table: 18mm or 19mm top, thicker or framed for long tops.
Doors
- Room doors: solid core flush doors, 30–32mm.
- Main door: solid core, 35mm or thicker, BWP grade.
- Bathrooms: WPC doors, which don't swell.

Bathrooms and balconies
Use WPC or PVC boards for vanities, under-sink units and balcony storage: they don't absorb water and termites don't eat them.
A typical 2BHK renovation
A 2BHK renovation in Delhi usually includes a modular kitchen, two or three wardrobes, a TV unit, a crockery unit, a study table, beds and several doors.
