Best Plywood for a Modular Kitchen in Delhi: BWR vs BWP, Thickness and Grade

Short answer: use 18mm BWR plywood for the kitchen cabinets, BWP plywood or WPC board for the sink cabinet, and 6mm for back panels. Shutters can be 18mm plywood or HDHMR with laminate or acrylic. MR (commercial) plywood is not enough for a Delhi kitchen.

Part of the kitchen Board Thickness
Base and wall cabinets BWR plywood 18mm or 19mm
Sink cabinet BWP plywood or WPC board 18mm
Shutters Plywood or HDHMR 18mm
Back panels Plywood 6mm
Inside of cabinets Liner laminate 0.8mm

How a modular kitchen is built

A modular kitchen has three parts:

  1. Carcass (the boxes): the cabinets that hold the shelves, drawers and corner units.
  2. Shutters (the fronts): the doors you see, in laminate, acrylic or PU.
  3. Countertop: granite or quartz, resting on the base cabinets.

Plywood goes into the carcass and often the shutters. With the right grade and thickness a kitchen lasts many years; with the wrong one, edges swell, laminate lifts and hinges work loose within a few years.

BWR vs BWP: the real difference

The difference is the glue that holds the layers together.

BWR (boiling water resistant)

  • Made to IS 303
  • Handles kitchen humidity, steam and occasional splashes
  • Costs less than BWP; the right choice for most of the kitchen

BWP (boiling water proof)

  • Marine plywood is BWP made to IS 710; since a 2024 amendment, IS 303 also has a BWP grade for interiors
  • The glue holds even after long contact with water
  • Costs more; worth it where water reaches the board daily

The simple rule:

  • Normal base and wall cabinets → good BWR plywood is enough
  • Under the sink, utility area, near a dishwasher or washing machine → BWP plywood, or WPC board, which doesn't absorb water at all

Which thickness where

  • 18mm or 19mm: carcass sides, bottoms, shelves, the sink unit and tall units. This is the standard in Delhi kitchens.
  • 12mm: light internal partitions only.
  • 6mm: back panels.

Avoid 12mm or 16mm for the main carcass or long shelves. Drawers and wide shelves carry utensils and sag in thinner board. If the shutters are MDF or HDHMR, keep the boxes in 18mm plywood.

Where each grade goes

  • Sink unit, utility area, washing machine base: 18mm BWP plywood or WPC board
  • Cabinet next to the hob: BWR works; use a heat-resistant adhesive for the laminate near the stove
  • Tall pantry unit and fridge side panels: 18mm BWR
  • Normal wall and base cabinets: 18mm BWR

This mix protects the wet zones without paying BWP prices for the whole kitchen.

Shutters, laminate and finish

A popular combination in Delhi today:

  • Carcass: 18mm BWR plywood (BWP under the sink)
  • Shutters: 18mm plywood or HDHMR with 1mm laminate or acrylic
  • Inside: white or light liner laminate, which reflects light and is easy to clean

Buying checklist

  1. Read the stamp: ISI mark, CM/L licence number, IS 303 or IS 710, and the grade. The stamp checker explains each marking.
  2. Look at the edge: few gaps or overlaps in the core.
  3. Measure the thickness: an 18mm sheet should measure close to 18mm.
  4. Take a GST bill with brand, grade and thickness; warranty claims need it.
  5. Mix grades sensibly: BWP where it's wet, BWR elsewhere.

FAQ

Can I build a kitchen with MR plywood? It's possible, but not recommended in Delhi. Steam, humidity and daily cleaning weaken MR plywood quickly. Use BWR at least.

Will 16mm plywood do? It's used in some light-use kitchens, but 18mm is more stable and holds hinges and drawer channels better. Choose 18mm, especially for drawers and wide shelves.
