Which Plywood Is Best for a Wardrobe? Thickness, Grade and MDF vs Plywood

Short answer: build the wardrobe body in 18mm or 19mm plywood, MR grade in a dry upper-floor room and BWR on an outer wall or ground floor. Use 12mm for short shelves (18mm for long or heavy ones), 6mm for the back, and 18mm plywood, MDF or HDHMR for the shutters.
| Part | Board | Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Sides, top, bottom, partitions | Plywood | 18mm or 19mm |
| Shelves up to about 2.5–3 ft | Plywood | 12mm |
| Long or heavily loaded shelves | Plywood or block board | 18mm / 19mm |
| Back panel | Plywood | 6mm |
| Shutters | Plywood, MDF or HDHMR | 18mm |
Plywood or MDF for a wardrobe?
Plywood
- Thin wood veneers glued in crossing layers
- Holds screws and hinges firmly
- Handles moisture better than MDF, especially in BWR grade
- Best for: the carcass (the box), lofts, hanging sections and shelves
MDF
- Wood fibre pressed with resin into a smooth, even board
- Perfect for routing, grooves and CNC patterns, and for paint or PU
- Holds screws less firmly than plywood
The combination most Delhi homes use:
Carcass (the inside box) → plywood Shutters (the doors) → MDF or HDHMR with laminate or PU, or plywood with laminate
This gives the strength of plywood where the weight is and the clean finish of MDF where it shows. HDHMR handles humidity better than plain MDF and suits wardrobes on outer walls. Full comparison: MDF vs plywood.
Which thickness
- 18mm or 19mm for the sides, top, bottom and partitions. They carry the weight and hold the hinges over a 7 ft height. This is the standard for any wardrobe you want to last.
- 12mm for short shelves; for shelves longer than about 2.5–3 ft, or loaded with books or blankets, use 18mm or block board.
- 6mm for the back panel and drawer bottoms.
Avoid a full carcass in 12mm (it sags and doesn't hold hinges well). 16mm is used in some budget work, but 18mm is the safer standard for the sides that carry the shutters.
MR or BWR?
- MR (commercial) plywood: enough for a wardrobe in a dry room on an upper floor. See what MR plywood is.
- BWR plywood: for wardrobes on an outer wall, on the ground floor, next to a bathroom wall, or in an AC room where condensation can form. See BWR plywood.
- Damp walls: fix the damp first, leave a small gap behind the wardrobe, and use BWR for the back. Termites also come from damp walls; read termites in plywood.
How many sheets?
The sheet calculator lays the parts out on 8x4 ft sheets. For common sizes it gives:
| Wardrobe | 18mm | 12mm | 6mm | Laminate + liner | Edge band |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 ft wide x 7 ft high x 2 ft deep, 3 shutters, 6 shelves | 4 sheets | 2 sheets | 2 sheets | 2 + 2 | about 36 m |
| Same with a 2 ft loft | 5 sheets | 2 sheets | 2 sheets | 2 + 2 | about 46 m |
With HDHMR shutters, one sheet of 18mm plywood comes off and about 2 HDHMR boards are added. Your carpenter's design (drawers, a dressing unit, profile handles) changes the count, so treat these as a first estimate.
Laminate for wardrobes
Matt, suede and lightly textured laminates suit wardrobes: they hide fingerprints and fine scratches. Put laminate outside and liner inside every shutter so it stays flat. Wood grains look good on sliding wardrobes. We stock Greenlam, Merino and Century; see laminates and how to choose laminate.
Hardware matters as much as the board
- Hinges: a 7 ft shutter needs about 5 hinges, one more if it's heavy (HDHMR or a mirror). Soft-close hinges protect the shutters. The hinge and channel picker works it out.
- Drawer channels: telescopic channels about 1–2 inches shorter than the inside depth.
- Locks and handles: rust-free fittings that match.

FAQ
Is 16mm or 19mm better for a wardrobe? 18mm or 19mm. It holds hinges better and doesn't bow over a 7 ft height. 16mm may do for a small, lightly used unit.
Can I make the whole wardrobe from MDF? It's possible, but a plywood carcass is stronger; an MDF carcass holds screws less well and can sag over time. The best combination is a plywood carcass with MDF or HDHMR shutters.
Which board for the wardrobe back? 6mm plywood. If the wall is damp, use BWR, leave a gap for air and get the damp treated.
Which laminate is best for a wardrobe? Matt, suede or lightly textured: scratches and fingerprints show less.
