Everything the Carpenter Needs Besides Plywood: The Full Material List

Short answer: besides plywood, a furniture job needs adhesive (Fevicol), laminate and liner, edge band, hardware (hinges, channels, handles, locks, tower bolts), fixings (screws, nails or pins, wall plugs), finishing strips (beading, lipping, moulding patti), and the carpenter's consumables (cutter blades, drill bits, sandpaper). Most delays on a job happen because one small item is missing. Make the list below with your carpenter before work starts, and send it to Nitin Plywood House, Alipur on +91-9212017608: everything on it is at one shop, delivered with the plywood.

"Carpenter ka saman list" is searched again and again, mostly by people whose carpenter keeps sending them out for one more item. The sheet counts for each piece of furniture are in their own posts: almirah and sliding wardrobe, bed, kitchen and a whole 2BHK. This post is everything else.

The full checklist

1. Boards

Item Note
Plywood: 18mm, 12mm, 6mm Count from the cut list; grade by room (types and grades)
HDHMR or block board (if used) Shutters, long shelves (HDHMR vs plywood)
Battens Frames for beds, lofts, wall panelling

2. Adhesive

Item Note
Fevicol SH General woodwork and joints
Fevicol Marine Kitchens, bathrooms, damp walls
Fevicol HeatX or Hi-Per Laminate pressing; HeatX near heat, Hi-Per for big and vertical sheets
No-nail adhesive Moulding on walls

Which one where: Fevicol Marine vs HeatX vs SH.

3. Surface and edges

Item Note
1mm laminate (outer faces) Shade number from the catalogue
Liner laminate (inside faces) Both faces of every shutter, so it doesn't bend
Edge band tape Matched to the laminate; count in metres
Veneer (if polished) Plus polish materials for the polisher
Beading, lipping or moulding patti Edges, glass, door frames, wall designs (the names)

4. Hardware

Item Note
Hinges Crank by position (0, 8, 16); soft-close if you want it (hinges and channels)
Drawer channels One pair per drawer; length 1–2 inches shorter than the inside depth
Handles One per shutter or drawer; long or profile handles for tall shutters
Locks Almirah, drawer and cupboard locks
Tower bolts and aldrops Doors and tall shutters
Magnets or stoppers Shutters without soft-close
Hanging rods and supports Wardrobes
Shelf supports Adjustable shelves
Sofa or bed legs, castor wheels As the design needs
Kitchen baskets, lift-up fittings As you choose (call to check what's in stock)

5. Fixings

Item Common sizes
Screws for hinges and channels Small, about No. 6 × 13–16 mm
Screws for carcass joints About No. 8 × 32–50 mm
Screws and plugs for the wall 6 or 8 mm plugs with No. 8 or 10 screws
Nails and pins Thin pins for beading; 1–1.5 inch nails for battens

What the screw numbers mean: screw size chart.

6. The carpenter's consumables

Item Note
Cutter blades 4-inch TCT blades; more teeth for laminate (which cutter blade)
Drill bits Wood bits, masonry bits for walls, 35 mm hinge bit
Sandpaper (regmal) Two or three grits for edges and polish work
Wood filler or putty Screw heads and small gaps

Tips that save a second trip

  1. Write the list with the carpenter, from his cut list, before work starts.
  2. Count hinges per shutter, not per almirah. A 7 ft shutter takes 4–5 hinges.
  3. Bring the laminate shade number when you buy edge band.
  4. Buy 5–10% extra edge band and patti. Running out mid-job costs a day.
  5. Ask for one bill with everything on it; it's easier to check later, and the warranty slips stay together.

FAQ

What does a carpenter need besides plywood? Adhesive, laminate, edge band, hardware (hinges, channels, handles, locks), fixings (screws, nails, plugs), finishing strips and consumables like blades and sandpaper. The full list is above.

Should I buy the material myself or let the carpenter buy it? Either works; buying it yourself shows you exactly what goes in. See buying the material yourself.

How many hinges for a wardrobe? 2 per shutter up to 3 ft, 3 up to 5 ft, 4–5 for 6–7 ft shutters.
