Factory Modular Kitchen vs Carpenter-Made Kitchen: What Really Differs

Short answer: "modular" means the kitchen is made as separate boxes (modules) in a factory, cut and edge-banded on machines, then fitted at your home. A carpenter-made kitchen is built on site. Both can be excellent or poor. What decides the result is the board and grade inside (BWP under the sink, BWR elsewhere, not particle board), the edge sealing, and the hardware. Factory kitchens give a sharper finish and faster fitting; carpenter-made kitchens give more control over the material and usually cost less.
The comments under "modular vs carpenter" videos are a fight: "factory finish is better", "a carpenter makes three kitchens for the price of one", "modular is engineered wood, it won't last", "I got it done by a company and they used low-quality ply". Each is true for some kitchens. Here's how to judge yours.
What actually differs
| Factory modular | Carpenter-made | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it's made | Factory, by machine | At your home, by hand and power tools |
| Board | Particle board or MDF in some budget lines; plywood or HDHMR in others. Ask. | You choose; usually plywood |
| Edge band | Machine-pressed, very neat | Hand-applied; neat with a good carpenter |
| Finish options | Laminate, acrylic, PU, membrane | Laminate, acrylic, veneer, PU (polish by a painter) |
| Fit to odd walls | Fillers cover the gaps | Built to the exact wall |
| Time on site | Short | Longer (days to weeks) |
| Your control over material | Low; you see the finished box | High, if you buy the material yourself |
| Cost | Usually higher | Usually lower |
| After-service | Company warranty (read it) | Depends on the carpenter |
| Changes later | Modules can be replaced | Any carpenter can alter it |
The question that matters most: what board is inside?
Ask, in writing, for each part:
- Sink unit: BWP plywood or WPC?
- Other units: BWR plywood, HDHMR, or particle board?
- Shutters: 18mm plywood, HDHMR, or MDF?
- Back panels: plywood or hardboard?
- Brand and IS number of the plywood, and a bill.
Particle board in a kitchen swells when water gets into an edge, and can't be repaired well. Comments asking "how do I check the factory used the brand I approved?" are common. If you can't see a stamp or a bill, you can't check. See online engineered-wood furniture vs carpenter-made.
A middle path
- Carpenter-made carcass, good hardware: BWR plywood carcass and BWP sink unit, bought by you, with soft-close hinges and good channels.
- Factory-finished shutters only: some buyers order machine-finished shutters (acrylic or PU) and have the carpenter build the boxes.
- Material from you, labour from the carpenter: the cleanest way to control quality: buy the material yourself.
How to choose
- Choose factory modular if you want the fastest fitting, a very sharp machine finish, and the company names the board, grade and brand in writing with a warranty you've read.
- Choose carpenter-made if you want to choose every board yourself, fit an odd-shaped kitchen exactly, and control the budget.
Either way, use the grade rules from the best plywood for a modular kitchen, and the 10 ft kitchen material list to check quantities.
FAQ
Is a modular kitchen better than a carpenter-made kitchen? Not automatically. The board inside, the edge sealing and the hardware decide it. A carpenter-made kitchen in BWR/BWP plywood can outlast a budget modular kitchen in particle board.
Is a modular kitchen made of plywood? Some are; some budget ones are particle board or MDF. Ask for the board, grade and brand of each part in writing.
Can I give my own material to the carpenter? Yes. It's common in Delhi to buy the material and pay the carpenter for labour.
