How Much Material for a 10 ft Modular Kitchen? The Full List

Short answer (estimates): a kitchen with 10 running feet of base units and 8 running feet of wall units takes about six 18mm sheets (one of them BWP for the sink unit, the rest BWR) and three 6mm sheets for backs, plus about 2 sheets of 1mm laminate, 4–6 of liner, about 50 m of edge band, 24–32 hinges, and the drawers and baskets you choose.
"Modular kitchen banane mein kitna kharcha aata hai?" is one of the most-watched questions on Indian YouTube. The answer is always material + labour + extras (stone top, sink, chimney, hob). This page is the material part. Labour: how carpenters charge per sq ft. For today's rate on the list, WhatsApp +91-9212017608.
Running feet, in one line
Running feet is the length along the wall. A straight 10 ft kitchen has 10 running feet of base units. An L-shaped one with 6 ft on one wall and 4 ft on the other also has 10. Wall units are counted separately, minus the gap for the chimney.
1. Board, part by part
| Part | Board | Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Sink unit (carcass) | BWP plywood (or WPC) | 18mm |
| Other base units | BWR plywood | 18mm |
| Wall units | BWR plywood | 18mm |
| Shelves | BWR plywood | 18mm (12mm for short wall-unit shelves) |
| Back panels | BWR plywood | 6mm |
| Shutters | 18mm plywood, HDHMR, or acrylic-faced board | 18mm |
| Drawer boxes | Plywood | 12mm sides, 6mm bottoms |
Why BWP under the sink and BWR elsewhere: best plywood for a modular kitchen. If termites have damaged your old kitchen: kitchen damaged by termites?
2. Sheet count (10 + 8 running feet, 2 ft modules)
| Material | Quantity (estimate) |
|---|---|
| 18mm BWP plywood | 1 sheet (sink unit) |
| 18mm BWR plywood | 5 sheets (carcass, shelves, plywood shutters) |
| 6mm BWR plywood | 3 sheets (backs) |
| 12mm plywood | 1 sheet if you add 2–3 drawers |
| HDHMR (if shutters are HDHMR) | about 2 boards, and 1 less 18mm plywood sheet |
These are the same numbers as the kitchen example in how many sheets do I need. A tall unit (fridge, oven or pantry) adds about 2 sheets of 18mm; a corner unit with a carousel or magic corner changes the carcass.
3. Laminate, edge band, adhesive
| Item | Quantity (estimate) |
|---|---|
| 1mm laminate (outside of shutters) | 2 sheets |
| Liner (inside of shutters) | 2 sheets |
| Liner (inside the carcass) | 2–4 sheets |
| Edge band | about 50 m, matched to the laminate |
| Adhesive | to the laminate area; ask us with the list |
Kitchens get steam and wet hands, so every edge needs edge band, including the bottom edges of shutters and the cut edges inside the sink unit. Choosing finishes: acrylic vs laminate for the kitchen, PU vs duco vs laminate and how to choose laminate.
4. Hardware
| Item | Quantity (typical) |
|---|---|
| Hinges (base and wall shutters up to 3 ft tall) | 2 per shutter, about 24–32 in all |
| Hinge type | Soft-close is worth it in kitchens; 0 / 8 crank by position |
| Drawer channels (telescopic, heavy duty for utensils) | 1 pair per drawer, 1–2 inches shorter than the inside depth |
| Baskets | Thali, cutlery, cup-saucer, bottle pull-out: as you choose |
| Lift-up fittings for wall units (optional) | 1 set per lift-up shutter |
| Handles or profile handles | 1 per shutter or drawer |
| Skirting for the plinth | 10 running ft |
| Adjustable legs (if used) | 4 per base unit |

5. Not on our list, but in your budget
Plan these with the kitchen, since they decide the sizes:
- Stone top (granite or quartz) and its cutting for the sink and hob
- Sink, tap and waste pipes
- Chimney and hob: the wall-unit gap and the electrical points
- Tiles behind the counter
Straight, L-shaped or parallel?
| Layout | Running feet example | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Straight | 10 base + 8 wall | Simplest; numbers above |
| L-shaped | 6 + 4 base, 4 + 4 wall | Same sheets; plan the corner unit |
| Parallel | 8 + 8 base | Add about 2 × 18mm, 1 × 6mm |
| U-shaped | 6 + 6 + 6 base | Two corners; add about 2–3 × 18mm |
FAQ
How many plywood sheets for a 10 ft kitchen? About six 18mm (one BWP for the sink unit, five BWR) and three 6mm, with plywood shutters. It's an estimate; check the cut list.
Is BWR enough for a kitchen? Yes for every unit except under the sink, which should be BWP or WPC.
How many hinges does a kitchen need? Two per shutter up to 3 ft tall, so about 24–32 for a 10 ft kitchen with wall units.
Which shutters last longest in a kitchen? 18mm BWR plywood or HDHMR with laminate on both sides and edge band all round. Acrylic and PU look glossier but need more care.
