BWR vs BWP Plywood: Which Waterproof Plywood Do You Need? (IS 303 vs IS 710)

Short answer: BWR (boiling water resistant) plywood handles humidity and splashes and is right for most kitchens and wardrobes. BWP (boiling water proof) plywood keeps its layers bonded even after long contact with water, and is needed under the sink, in bathrooms and in other places that get wet daily. No plywood is "100% waterproof": the glue can be, but the wood at an open edge still absorbs water.
Why Delhi homes need water-resistant plywood
Delhi swings between dry heat, monsoon humidity and winter damp, and kitchens and bathrooms add daily steam and splashes. With the wrong grade, these problems start within a few years:
- Swollen edges
- Laminate lifting or chipping
- Loose screws and hinges
- Fungus and a musty smell
So for modular kitchens, washbasin counters, bathroom storage and balcony units, the grade matters.
BWR plywood (IS 303)
BWR, boiling water resistant, plywood:
- Is made to IS 303
- Handles kitchen humidity, steam and occasional splashes
- Costs less than BWP, which makes it the value choice for most furniture
It is reliable for indoor kitchens and furniture, but not for places where water stands or drips every day.
BWP plywood (IS 710 marine, and IS 303 BWP)
BWP, boiling water proof, plywood uses a phenolic glue that holds the layers together even when wet. There are two kinds:
- Marine plywood (IS 710): made to stricter rules on core gaps, veneer quality and bonding, for constantly wet conditions.
- IS 303 BWP: since a 2024 amendment, the general purpose standard also has a BWP grade for humid interiors.
Use BWP for:
- Cabinets under the sink
- Bathroom storage and vanities
- Balcony and utility units (with proper finishing)
It costs more than BWR, but in a wet spot it saves the cost of replacing the furniture.
BWR vs BWP at a glance
| BWR plywood (IS 303) | BWP plywood (IS 710 marine or IS 303 BWP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Water resistance | Good | Very high |
| Typical use | Kitchen carcass, wardrobes | Sink base, bathroom, very damp spots |
| Price | Medium | Higher |
| In a Delhi home | Most indoor furniture | The wet zones |
The sensible mix: you don't need BWP everywhere. We usually suggest:
- Normal cabinets → good BWR plywood
- Sink unit and washing area → BWP plywood
- Bathroom vanity and storage → BWP, or WPC board, which doesn't absorb water at all
IS 303 vs IS 710 in plain words
IS 303 covers general purpose interior plywood: MR (for dry rooms), BWR, and since 2024 an interior BWP grade.
IS 710 covers marine plywood: always BWP, made for severe moisture, originally for boats. In a home it gives the longest life in the wettest spots.
Always read the IS number and grade printed on the sheet; don't rely on a salesperson saying "waterproof". The stamp checker explains the markings, and how to read a plywood stamp covers the ISI licence check.
A simple boil test
This is a rough check, not a lab test, but it helps you judge a sample:
- Cut a small piece, 3 to 4 inches square.
- Keep it in boiling water for 2 to 3 hours.
- Take it out and check:
- Are the layers peeling apart?
- Are there gaps or bubbles between the plies?
- Has it warped or twisted badly?
A good BWP sample comes through this well; a poor board starts to bubble and separate.
Rates
Rates for BWR, BWP, MDF and HDHMR change with the brand, thickness and market, so we don't print them. For today's rate, call Nitin Plywood House, Alipur on +91-9212017608, or visit us at Main Narela Road, Dayal Market, Alipur Village, Delhi 110036.
Tips to avoid a costly compromise
- Don't accept "waterproof" on its own; ask for the grade and IS number
- Look at the actual sheet going into the sink unit
- Mix BWR and BWP sensibly instead of using a low grade everywhere
- Seal every edge with edge band, and use a waterproof adhesive near water; the glue inside the plywood can't protect an open edge
FAQ
Which plywood is 100% waterproof? None, strictly. BWP's glue is waterproof, but the wood absorbs water at open edges. Seal the edges, and use WPC board where water stands for hours.
Is marine plywood the same as BWP? Marine plywood is BWP made to IS 710. All marine plywood is BWP, but BWP can also be IS 303.
