Kitchen Plywood Thickness and Grade Checklist for Delhi Homes

The checklist in one table:
| Part | Grade | Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Carcass sides, top, bottom | BWR | 18mm |
| Shelves | BWR | 18mm |
| Light internal partitions | BWR | 12mm |
| Back panels | BWR | 6mm |
| Sink cabinet (every part) | BWP plywood or WPC board | 18mm |
| Shutters | Plywood or HDHMR | 18mm |
Why kitchen plywood decisions go wrong
Most kitchen problems start with one of two mistakes:
- The wrong grade where water reaches: MR or plain BWR under the sink
- Boards too thin for the load: 12mm shelves carrying utensils, or a 16mm carcass holding heavy shutters
A modular kitchen can look premium from outside; how long it lasts depends on what's inside.
Thickness, part by part
- Carcass sides, top and bottom: 18mm. They hold the hinges, the drawer channels and the countertop.
- Shelves: 18mm. Kitchen shelves carry steel utensils, pressure cookers and jars, and a thin shelf sags in a few months.
- Partitions: 12mm where they carry little load; 18mm where a drawer channel is fixed to them.
- Back panels: 6mm.
If a cabinet is wider than about 2.5–3 ft and heavily loaded, add a support or a partition rather than relying on one long shelf.
Grade: where BWR is enough and where BWP is needed
- Base and wall cabinets away from the sink: good BWR is enough. See BWR plywood.
- The sink cabinet: BWP plywood or WPC board, for every part of that cabinet, not just the bottom.
- Near the water purifier, dishwasher or washing machine: BWP.
- Cabinets against a wall with plumbing lines: prefer the higher grade; a slow leak inside a wall shows up in the cabinet first.
The difference is explained in BWR vs BWP plywood. This mix protects the wet zones without paying BWP prices for the whole kitchen.
Finishing counts as much as the board
Plywood is only one part of a kitchen that lasts. Check:
- Laminate: 1mm outside, 0.8mm liner inside, on every shutter.
- Edges: every exposed edge sealed with edge band. Poor edge finishing ruins even good plywood.
- Adhesive: waterproof near the sink, heat resistant near the hob. See Fevicol and adhesives.
- Hardware: stainless steel hinges near the sink, heavy-duty channels for utensil drawers.
Before the carpenter starts cutting
- Match the grade and thickness of every sheet against the agreed list.
- Check one sheet yourself: the stamp (ISI mark, CM/L number, IS number, grade), the edge and the thickness. The stamp checker helps.
- Confirm the sink cabinet is BWP or WPC, and mark it on the sheets.
- Confirm the hinges and channels suit the board thickness.
- Keep one spare sheet for changes late in the job.
To count the sheets for your kitchen, use the sheet calculator: 10 ft of base cabinets and 8 ft of wall cabinets come to about six 18mm and three 6mm sheets.
After installation
- Open and close every shutter several times: they should close straight and evenly.
- Load a shelf and check it doesn't bow.
- Look at the sink cabinet's edges and joints: sealed, with no exposed raw edge.
- Check every visible edge is covered.
