PVC vs Plywood Kitchen: Which Lasts Longer, and Where Each Fits

Short answer: PVC (and WPC) board never swells with water and termites don't eat it, so it's the safest choice under the sink and in wet corners. Plywood (BWR, with BWP under the sink) is stronger, holds hinge and channel screws better and takes any finish, so it's the better choice for the rest of the kitchen, especially drawers, tall units and wall units that carry weight. Many good kitchens use both: a WPC or PVC sink unit and BWR plywood everywhere else.
Low-cost "PVC modular kitchen" videos get tens of millions of views in India, and the comments split into two camps: "PVC is best, no water problem" and "PVC sags, plywood is best". Both are partly right. It depends on which part of the kitchen.

Side by side
| PVC / WPC board | BWR / BWP plywood | |
|---|---|---|
| Water | Doesn't absorb water; doesn't swell | BWR resists moisture; BWP resists boiling water; open edges still need edge band |
| Termites | Not eaten | Treated plywood resists them; untreated can be attacked |
| Strength under load | Lower; long shelves can sag, especially near heat | High; carries heavy utensils and stone tops |
| Screw holding (hinges, channels) | Lower; screws can loosen with heavy use | Good, especially in 18mm |
| Heat near the hob | Can soften with long direct heat; keep a gap | Not affected |
| Weight | PVC is light; WPC is heavy | Medium |
| Finish | Plain or laminated; fewer finish options | Any laminate, acrylic, veneer, PU |
| Repair | Hard to patch | Easy to repair or re-laminate |
| Cost | Depends on thickness and density; ask for today's rate | Depends on grade and brand; ask for today's rate |
PVC vs WPC: both are plastic-based boards. WPC has wood powder mixed in, so it's denser and holds screws better; PVC board is lighter and suits low-load panels. More: what WPC board is.
Where each fits in a kitchen
| Part | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sink unit | WPC / PVC, or BWP plywood | Pipe leaks and wet hands every day |
| Base units beside the sink | BWR plywood (WPC if the area stays wet) | Load plus occasional splashes |
| Drawers (utensils, thali) | BWR plywood | Channels and heavy loads need screw holding |
| Base unit under the hob | BWR plywood | Heat and weight |
| Wall units | BWR plywood | Hung from the wall by their screws |
| Tall unit (fridge, oven, pantry) | BWR plywood | Height and weight |
| Shutters | 18mm BWR plywood or HDHMR, laminated both sides; WPC under the sink | Flatness and hinge holding |

When an all-PVC kitchen makes sense
- A rented flat or a short-term setup, where low weight and quick fitting matter more than long life.
- A ground-floor kitchen with constant damp where the damp can't be fixed.
- Light use: few heavy utensils, no tall units.
Even then, use thicker, denser board for anything that carries weight, and avoid long unsupported shelves.
When plywood is the better choice
- A family kitchen with heavy utensils, pressure cookers and a stone top.
- Drawers and baskets on telescopic channels.
- You want a finish that looks like the rest of the house (laminate, acrylic, veneer).
- You want to repair rather than replace in 10 years.
Common mistakes
- MR (commercial) plywood under the sink. It swells in months. Use BWP or WPC there: waterproof plywood guide.
- PVC board right next to the hob without a gap or heat shield.
- Thin PVC shelves over a long span; they bow under steel utensils.
- Plywood edges left open inside the sink unit. Edge band every cut edge.
FAQ
Is a PVC kitchen better than plywood? Under the sink, yes. For drawers, wall units and anything that carries weight, plywood is stronger and holds screws better.
Does a PVC kitchen get termites? No, PVC and WPC aren't eaten by termites. Treated BWR or BWP plywood also resists them; see termites in plywood.
How long does a PVC kitchen last? It doesn't rot or swell, but hinges and channels can loosen sooner with heavy daily use, and long shelves can sag. A plywood kitchen with BWP under the sink lasts for many years with care.
Which is cheaper, PVC or plywood? It depends on the thickness and density of the PVC and the grade of plywood. Send both options to us for today's rate.
