Sunmica vs Laminate: Is There a Difference, and Which Thickness to Buy?

Short answer: sunmica and laminate are the same thing. "Sunmica" was a brand name that became the everyday word for decorative laminate. What matters is the thickness and finish: 1mm on shutters and tops, 0.8mm liner inside cabinets, and matt or textured finishes where hands touch most.
Where the word "sunmica" comes from
Sunmica was a brand of decorative laminate that became so common that people called every laminate "sunmica", the way every adhesive gets called "Fevicol". When a carpenter says "sunmica lag jayega", he means a decorative laminate.
A decorative laminate is layers of resin-soaked paper pressed under heat into a hard, ready-finished sheet. It is pasted onto plywood, MDF or HDHMR with a suitable adhesive and pressed.
Thickness: which one where
| Thickness | Use |
|---|---|
| 0.6mm to 0.8mm (liner) | Inside cabinets, the inside face of shutters, back sides |
| 1mm | Shutters and most exposed surfaces; the standard choice |
| 1.25mm and thicker | Table tops, counters and heavy-wear surfaces |
A shutter needs laminate outside and liner inside. Laminate on one side only pulls the shutter out of shape over time; read why shutters bend.
Laminate vs PU vs acrylic
Laminate
- Good scratch resistance, especially at 1mm
- Handles daily kitchen use; keep very hot pans off the surface
- With sealed edges, handles humidity well
- Best for: kitchen and wardrobe shutters, TV units, crockery units, study tables
PU or paint finish
- Looks premium, but scratches show
- Higher maintenance, especially in gloss
- Can be re-polished, but that costs extra
Acrylic
- Deep, mirror-like gloss
- Shows scratches and fingerprints more
- Costs more than laminate; see acrylic sheets
That's why most Delhi flats and houses choose laminate: it fits most budgets, lasts, and comes in hundreds of designs.
Best use, room by room
Modular kitchen
- Shutters: 1mm laminate
- Inside: white or light liner laminate, or pre-laminated board, for easy cleaning
- Avoid very light high-gloss surfaces if you cook heavily; fingerprints and scratches show quickly
See the modular kitchen plywood guide.
Wardrobes and bedroom furniture
- 0.8mm or 1mm laminate for wardrobes, lofts, study tables and side tables
- Matt, suede and textured finishes look calm in a bedroom and hide handling marks
- Straight-grain wood designs (teak, oak or walnut looks) are popular for sliding wardrobes
TV units, crockery units and partitions
- Here you can play with design: gloss with wood grain, fluted panels with solid tones, or glass with laminate
At Nitin Plywood House you can choose from Greenlam, Merino and Century catalogues in the shop.
Cost: laminate vs other finishes
We don't print prices because rates change, but in relative terms:
- 1mm laminate on plywood: mid-range, and the best long-term value
- PU or duco on MDF: more expensive, with touch-ups over time
- Acrylic: high-gloss finish at a higher rate, and more sensitive to scratches

Keeping laminate looking new
- Clean with a soft cloth and mild soap solution
- Don't put acidic or harsh cleaners directly on the laminate
- Don't put a hot tawa or pan straight on the surface; use a trivet
- Keep edges and corners sealed with edge band so water doesn't get under the laminate
If laminate lifts or bubbles, the cause is usually the adhesive or the board; read why sunmica lifts.
