Kitchen Damaged by Termites? HDHMR, BWP Plywood or WPC for the New One

Short answer: no board alone makes a kitchen termite-proof. First treat the walls and floor and fix the damp; termites come from the soil and need moisture. Then use WPC board for the sink cabinet and anything touching a damp wall or floor (termites don't eat it), termite-treated BWR or BWP plywood for the carcass, and HDHMR or plywood for the shutters, with every edge sealed.
The question we hear most after a termite attack
"Our old kitchen was eaten by termites. Should the new one be HDHMR or BWP plywood? We want a complete solution."
It's a fair question, and the honest answer starts with the walls, not the board.
Why termites reached the old kitchen
Termites live in the soil and climb through wall cracks, floor joints and pipe openings. They need wood and moisture. A kitchen gives them both: plumbing, a sink, often a damp wall behind the cabinets, and on a ground floor, the soil right below.
So if the cause isn't treated, termites will look for any wood-based board in the new kitchen too. Read why termites attack plywood.
Step 1: before the carpenter starts
- Pest control treatment of the walls and floor where the old kitchen stood, and along the plumbing. Treating behind finished cabinets is far harder.
- Fix the damp: leaking pipes, a seeping wall, the waste outlet. Without moisture, termites struggle.
- Remove all the damaged wood, including any old battens or frames left in the wall.
Step 2: choose the board part by part
| Part | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sink cabinet (all of it) | WPC board | Doesn't absorb water; termites don't eat it |
| Base cabinets against an outer or damp wall | WPC, or termite-treated BWP plywood | Closest to soil and damp |
| Other base and wall cabinets | Termite-treated BWR plywood | Strong, holds screws, handles kitchen humidity |
| Shutters | HDHMR or plywood with laminate or acrylic | Flat finish; off the floor and away from walls |
| Plinth and kick boards | WPC or PVC | They sit on the floor and get mopped |
HDHMR, BWP plywood or WPC: what each does against termites
| HDHMR | BWP plywood | WPC board | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Made of | Wood fibre and resin | Wood veneers and waterproof glue | Plastic with wood flour |
| Termites | Depends on the brand's treatment | Depends on the treatment | Not attacked |
| Water | Moisture resistant, not waterproof | Glue is waterproof; edges can absorb water | Doesn't absorb water |
| Strength and screw holding | Good | Very good | Good, lower than plywood |
| Best use here | Shutters | Carcass | Sink, damp walls, plinths |
BWP doesn't mean termite-proof. BWP describes the glue. Protection from termites comes from a separate treatment that some brands apply and state on the sheet or warranty card. Ask for it, and check the warranty wording.
Step 3: details that keep termites out
- Keep cabinets off the floor with legs or a WPC plinth, and leave a small gap behind cabinets on damp walls.
- Seal every edge with edge band, and fit liner inside; open edges let moisture in.
- Use a waterproof adhesive near water. See Fevicol Marine vs HeatX vs SH.
- Fix any leak at once, and check under the sink every few months.

FAQ
Is HDHMR termite-proof? It's wood-fibre based, so it depends on the brand's treatment and what its warranty covers. Use it for shutters, away from damp walls and floors.
Is WPC better than plywood for a termite-affected kitchen? For the sink cabinet, damp walls and anything on the floor, yes: termites don't eat it and it doesn't absorb water. For the main carcass, treated plywood is stronger.
Will treated plywood stop termites completely? Treatment greatly reduces the risk, but if the wall stays damp and untreated, termites can still come. Treat the walls and fix the damp first.
