Moulding, Beading, Margin Patti, Cornice and Skirting: Names, Sizes and What Each Is For

Short answer: all of these are thin strips that finish a job, and each has a place. Moulding patti makes the frames on a wall or ceiling. Margin patti and chaukhat patti (architrave) cover the joint where a door frame meets the wall. Beading holds or trims an edge: glass in a door, a panel in a shutter, a laminate edge. Lipping patti is solid wood glued on a plywood edge. Cornice runs where the ceiling meets the wall, skirting where the wall meets the floor, and a T patti sits in the joint between two panels. They come in wood and PVC; Nitin Plywood House, Alipur keeps wooden margin and moulding patti, beading, wooden cornice and PVC moulding. Call +91-9212017608 for the sizes in stock today.
"Is stick ko kya bolte hain?" is one of the most common questions under wall moulding videos. The names overlap, and carpenters, painters and shops use them loosely, so here is each one with where it goes.
The names in one table
| Name (what people also call it) | Where it goes | What it does | Usual width (common range) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moulding patti (wall moulding, wall trim, French moulding) | On a wall or ceiling, in frames | Decoration: frames, panels, a "moulded wall" | Inner frames about 15–25 mm, outer frames about 30–50 mm |
| Margin patti (door margin patti) | Along the edge of a door frame or a panel, on the wall face | Covers the gap or uneven joint along an edge | About 25–50 mm |
| Chaukhat patti (architrave) | Around a door or window frame, on both faces of the wall | Covers the joint between chaukhat and plaster, frames the door | About 50–75 mm (2–3 inch) |
| Beading (beading patti) | Around glass, panels, or along an edge | Holds glass or a panel in place, or trims an edge | About 10–20 mm |
| Lipping patti | Glued on the front edge of plywood shelves, tables and shutters | Hides the plywood layers, takes knocks | As thick as the board, about 5–10 mm deep |
| T patti | In a groove between two panels or laminate sheets | Covers the joint, adds a line | Narrow, usually 6–12 mm face |
| Cornice | Where the ceiling meets the wall | Hides the joint, gives a finished edge to a ceiling | About 50–100 mm or more |
| Skirting | Where the wall meets the floor | Protects the wall from mops and kicks, hides the floor joint | About 75–100 mm (3–4 inch) high |
The widths are the ranges you'll usually see, not a stock list. Sizes in stock change; call +91-9212017608 with the width you want.
Wood or PVC?
Most of these come in both.
| Wooden patti | PVC moulding | |
|---|---|---|
| Water and damp | Can swell or rot if it stays wet | Not affected by water |
| Termites | Can be attacked, like any wood | Not attacked |
| Finish | Takes polish, stain or paint | Usually painted or comes finished |
| Strength at the edge | Takes knocks, screws and nails well | Softer; dents more easily |
| Best for | Doors, furniture, polished work, lipping | Damp walls, bathrooms, painted wall designs |
The detailed comparison (with MDF, POP and the "charcoal" type) is in PVC or wooden moulding.
What each one is used with
- Wall moulding: fixed on a putty-finished wall or on a plywood panel, then painted with the wall. How many running feet a wall takes: wall moulding size and quantity.
- Door work: chaukhat patti and margin patti go with the frame; see which material for a chaukhat and which plywood for a door.
- Furniture edges: lipping patti or PVC edge band tape; lipping patti vs edge band compares them.
- Ceilings: a cornice finishes a wooden or PVC ceiling; for the ceiling board itself see plywood for lofts and ceilings.
Buying tips
- Count running feet, not pieces. Add up every side that gets a strip, then add about 10% for corner cuts.
- Buy the whole job's patti at once. Wooden patti from different lots can differ in colour and grain, which shows after polish.
- Check wooden patti is straight and dry. Sight down its length; a bowed strip won't sit flat on a wall.
- Match the profile on both sides of a door, and on every frame of a wall design.
- Ask for the same width for the whole design. A 2 mm difference shows at the corners.
FAQ
What is a beading patti called in English? Beading, or a bead. On a door or window it's "glass beading"; along an edge it's "edge beading".
What is margin patti? A strip that covers the joint or gap along an edge, usually where a door frame or a panel meets the wall.
What is the difference between moulding and beading? Moulding is mostly decorative and wider (wall frames, cornice). Beading is narrower and usually holds or trims an edge (glass, panels).
What is a cornice? The moulding along the top of a wall where it meets the ceiling.
Skirting or no skirting? Skirting protects the bottom of the wall from mops and furniture, and hides an uneven floor edge. In rooms that are mopped every day it's worth having.
