Which Material for a Door Chaukhat? Wood, Plywood or WPC, for Damp and Termites

Short answer: use a WPC chaukhat in bathrooms, kitchens, balconies and on damp ground floors, because it doesn't swell or attract termites. Use good, seasoned, treated wood for the main door. In dry upper-floor rooms, wood or well-sealed plywood both work.

Why the chaukhat matters so much

However good the door, if the chaukhat (door frame) bends, swells or gets eaten by termites, the door starts sticking, the lock goes out of line and the hinges loosen. The weakest part of a chaukhat is the bottom, which sits closest to floor water and mopping.

There are three common choices: solid wood, plywood and WPC.

The three compared

Wood Plywood WPC
Strength Very good (if the wood is good and dry) Good, from the layers Good
Damp and water Can swell or crack with long-term moisture Moisture gets in at open edges Doesn't absorb water
Termites Can be attacked (treatment needed) Can be attacked, especially from below Not attacked
Screw and hinge holding Very good Good (weaker into the edge) Good with the right screws
Finish Polish, paint Laminate, veneer, paint Paint, laminate
Best for Main door, bedrooms Dry interior rooms Bathrooms, kitchens, balconies, ground floors

Which frame where

  • Bathroom, toilet, kitchen, balcony: a WPC chaukhat is the safest: no swelling at the bottom and no termites. Pair it with a WPC door for the best result.
  • Main door: good, seasoned and treated wood, for strength and a heavy door.
  • Bedroom or living room (upper floor, dry wall): wood or good plywood both work.
  • Ground floor or a damp wall: whether wood or plywood, seal the bottom; WPC is the least trouble.

A plywood chaukhat: when it works and when it doesn't

A plywood chaukhat (several layers joined) works fine in dry rooms and is easy to design. Trouble starts when:

  • the bottom of the frame sits in floor water,
  • the edges are open (laminate or paint only on the front),
  • the wall is damp.

So avoid a plywood chaukhat in wet places, and even in dry rooms get all six faces sealed.

A wooden chaukhat: what to check

  • The wood should be seasoned (dry); wet wood shrinks and warps later.
  • Termite and borer treatment before it goes into the wall.
  • No large knots or cracks.

On termites: why termites attack plywood.

A WPC chaukhat: what to check

  • WPC is good, but quality varies: check the weight and density, and avoid very light frames.
  • Use screws suited to WPC for the hinges.
  • More on WPC: what WPC board is.

Choose the door and frame together

Pick the frame and the door for the same place: a WPC chaukhat in a bathroom with an MR wooden door is half a job. The door material list: which plywood for a door and the door material calculator.

FAQ

Which is the strongest chaukhat? In a dry place, good treated wood. In a wet place, WPC lasts longer because water and termites don't affect it.

Does a plywood chaukhat last long? In a dry room with sealed edges, yes. Not for a bathroom or a damp wall.

Which door goes with the frame? A WPC door in the bathroom; solid core flush doors in rooms.
