Which Plywood or Board for a Door? Thickness, Sheets and the Full Material List

Short answer: for most homes, buy a ready solid core flush door (30–32mm for rooms, 35mm or more for the main door) rather than making a door from plywood sheets, and a WPC door for the bathroom. A laminated 3 x 7 ft bedroom door needs the door, 2 sheets of 1mm laminate, adhesive, about 7 m of edge band, 3 hinges of 4 inch, a lock set and a tower bolt.
First: a ready flush door or a plywood door?
There are two ways to get a door:
| Ready flush door | Door made from plywood or block board | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Factory-made: frame and core inside, plywood faces outside | The carpenter makes it from plywood or block board sheets |
| Standard | IS 2202 (with the ISI mark) | The plywood's own IS standard |
| Straightness | Pressed in a factory; stays straight | Depends on the carpenter's work |
| Size | Standard sizes, trimmed slightly to fit | Any size |
| When to choose | Most doors in a home | Very unusual sizes or designs |
For most homes, a ready solid core flush door is the simplest and most reliable choice. For the bathroom, a WPC door is better.

Which door, and how thick?
| Place | Door | Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom, living room | Solid core flush door (MR; BWP if the wall is damp) | 30–32mm |
| Main door | Solid core flush door, BWP | 35mm or more |
| Bathroom or toilet | WPC door (or BWP flush door with every edge sealed) | About 30mm |
| Kitchen or balcony | BWP flush door or WPC | 30–32mm |
| Store room | Flush door | 30mm |

Material list for a 3 x 7 ft door (laminate finish)
A normal bedroom door, 3 x 7 ft (about 36 x 84 inch), laminated on both sides:
| Item | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Solid core flush door, 30–32mm | 1 |
| Laminate (sunmica), 1mm | 2 sheets (one per side) |
| Adhesive for laminate | 1 pack (ask at the shop for the size) |
| Edge band or lipping | about 7 m |
| Hinges, 4 inch | 3 |
| Lock or latch with handle | 1 set |
| Tower bolt | 1 |
One 8 x 4 ft laminate sheet covers one side completely, so a door needs 2 sheets (both sides). Laminate on one side with the other left bare can make the door bend.
For a main door: a BWP door of 35mm or more, 4 hinges of 5 inch, a mortise lock and an aldrop. For a double door, the material doubles per leaf, with tower bolts at the top and bottom of the second leaf.
4-inch or 5-inch hinges?
- Normal internal doors: usually 4 inch, 3 hinges.
- Main door, a heavy door or one taller than 7 ft: 5 inch, 4 hinges.
Hinge screws go into the frame timber at the door's edge, which is why the edges shouldn't be trimmed much.
Want a veneer finish?
Instead of laminate, decorative veneer with polish gives a natural wood look. Veneer also goes on both sides (2 sheets); take sheets from the same lot so the grain matches. Veneer options: decorative veneer.
What about the chaukhat?
A door only works well in a straight, strong chaukhat. Order the door after measuring the frame: width in three places and height in three places, and use the smallest figure. Choosing the frame material: which material for a chaukhat.
FAQ
Will 18mm plywood do for a door? Ready flush doors start at 30mm and have a frame inside. A door from a single 18mm sheet is light and weak; for a home, a ready solid core flush door is better.
Can I use a plywood door in a bathroom? Wood swells in constant damp. A WPC door is the safest; if it's plywood or a flush door, take BWP and seal all six faces.
What laminate thickness for a door? 1mm laminate on both sides.
