Which Plywood for a Loft and Ceiling Paneling? Thickness, Grade and Weight

Short answer: for a loft, use an 18mm base, 12mm or 18mm shutters and a 6mm back; MR in a dry room, BWR above a bathroom or on an outer wall. For ceiling or wall paneling, fix 6–12mm plywood (or MDF/HDHMR for grooved designs) on a batten frame. Lighter pine plywood is easier to fix overhead.

Lofts: what they carry

A loft (taand) above a wardrobe or a door holds suitcases, bedding, boxes and seasonal things, often heavy and pushed in and out. The base takes the load; the shutters are opened only now and then.

Part Thickness Note
Base 18mm Carries the load; add a support or partition for spans over about 3 ft
Sides and partitions 18mm Hold the base and the hinges
Shutters 12mm or 18mm 18mm for wide or tall shutters, so they stay flat
Back 6mm Covers only

A wardrobe loft of 2 ft adds about one 18mm sheet to a 6 ft wardrobe; the sheet calculator includes loft height.

Grade for a loft

  • A dry bedroom: MR plywood.
  • Above a bathroom or kitchen, on an outer wall, or a top-floor room under a roof that gets damp: BWR. See BWR plywood.

Why lighter sheets help overhead

Fixing boards high up is awkward, and every kilogram above head height is felt by the carpenter and by the fixings. Pine plywood is noticeably lighter than hardwood plywood, which makes it a practical choice for loft shutters, back panels and ceiling work. For a loft base carrying heavy suitcases, an 18mm hardwood-core sheet holds screws better.

Ceiling and wall paneling

Wooden ceilings and wall panels are usually fixed on a frame of timber battens, not straight onto the slab or wall:

  • Plain paneling: 6mm to 12mm plywood, laminated or veneered.
  • Grooved, fluted or CNC designs: MDF in dry rooms, HDHMR where it may get humid.
  • The frame: straight, dry timber battens, spaced so the panel doesn't sag between them.
  • On a damp wall: fix the damp first; the batten frame leaves an air gap, and BWR plywood or HDHMR handles moisture better.

For bathrooms and other wet areas, PVC or WPC panels suit better than any wood-based board. See WPC and PVC boards.

Finish

  • Laminate both faces of loft shutters (outside and liner), so they stay flat. Read why shutters bend.
  • Veneer and polish for a natural wood ceiling. See decorative veneer.
  • Edge band on every visible edge.

FAQ

6mm or 12mm plywood for a ceiling? For plain paneling on a close-spaced batten frame, 6mm to 9mm is common; 12mm gives a stiffer panel where the frame is wider apart or the design has grooves.

Which plywood is best for a loft? An 18mm base in MR (dry rooms) or BWR (damp or outer walls), with 12mm or 18mm shutters. Pine plywood keeps the weight down for shutters and backs.
