Door Beading and Chaukhat Patti: Which Wood, Which Size, How Many Feet per Door

Short answer: a door takes up to three kinds of strip: chaukhat patti (architrave) on the wall around the frame, beading around glass or panels in the shutter, and sometimes lipping on the shutter edges. For a 3×7 ft door, chaukhat patti takes about 18–20 running ft per face, so about 36–40 ft for both faces. Use hardwood or teak (sagwan) patti where the door is polished, ordinary wooden patti where it will be painted or laminated, and PVC on bathroom doors. Nitin Plywood House, Alipur keeps wooden beading, margin and moulding patti and PVC moulding; call +91-9212017608 for the widths and woods in stock today.

Before Diwali, many homes redo doors: new laminate, polish, or a new frame. The strips around the door are what make it look finished, and they're the most asked-about part ("beading kis lakdi ki hoti hai?", "ek door mein kitna lagta hai?").

The three strips on a door

Strip Where What it does Usual size
Chaukhat patti (architrave, margin patti) On the wall face, around the chaukhat, both sides of the wall Covers the joint between frame and plaster; frames the door About 50–75 mm (2–3 inch) wide, 10–15 mm thick
Beading Around glass panes, louvres or raised panels in the shutter Holds the glass or panel; trims the edge About 10–20 mm
Lipping On the four edges of a flush or plywood shutter Hides the plywood layers, takes knocks, takes polish As thick as the shutter, 5–10 mm deep

Which wood for which door

Door Patti Why
Main door, polished Teak (sagwan) or a matching hardwood Takes polish and stain like the door; strong
Room door, laminated or painted Ordinary wooden patti Will be painted or covered; strength matters more than grain
Bathroom door PVC patti or moulding Water every day; wood swells at the bottom
Door on a damp wall PVC chaukhat patti, or wood sealed on the back Damp comes through the plaster

Teak beading and patti are asked for by name ("sagwan beading patti"). If the door is going to be painted or laminated, teak is money you won't see. Which woods are in stock today: call +91-9212017608.

How many running feet (estimates)

One 3×7 ft door opening:

Strip Running feet
Chaukhat patti, one face (7 + 7 + 3 ft, plus corner cuts) about 18–20 ft
Chaukhat patti, both faces about 36–40 ft
Lipping on a 3×7 ft shutter (all four edges) about 20 ft
Glass beading the perimeter of each glass pane, on one or both faces

For several doors, multiply and add one spare length. Count in pieces: each side of the frame should be one piece without a joint (7 ft sides need pieces of 7 ft or longer).

Buying tips

  1. Straight and dry. Sight down each length. A bowed patti opens a gap against the wall.
  2. Same lot for all doors in a room, so the grain and colour match after polish.
  3. Wide enough to cover the joint. The patti should overlap the frame and the plaster by at least a centimetre each side.
  4. Seal the back of wooden patti on outer or damp walls with primer or paint before fixing.

The door itself

Which board or door to choose: which flush door to buy, which plywood for a door, and which material for the chaukhat. Doors that jam in the monsoon: why doors swell in the rain.

FAQ

Which wood is used for door beading? Teak or a hardwood for polished doors; ordinary wooden patti for painted or laminated doors; PVC for bathroom doors.

How much beading patti for one door? About 36–40 running ft of chaukhat patti for both faces of a 3×7 ft door, plus about 20 ft of lipping if the shutter edges get it.

What is the patti around a door frame called? Architrave in English; chaukhat patti or margin patti locally.

Can PVC patti be used on a main door? It can, but wood looks and wears better on a polished main door. PVC suits bathroom and damp-wall doors.
