MDF vs Plywood: Which Should You Use for Kitchen, Wardrobe and Furniture?

Short answer: use plywood for anything that carries weight or meets moisture (carcass, shelves, beds, kitchen boxes) and MDF for parts where a smooth finish matters (painted shutters, grooved and CNC panels) in dry rooms. In a kitchen or a humid room, use HDHMR instead of plain MDF.
| MDF | Plywood (BWR/BWP) | |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Medium | High |
| Moisture resistance | Low | Medium to high |
| Screw holding | Moderate | Excellent |
| Surface | Very smooth, best for paint | Wood grain; best with laminate or veneer |
| Best for | Shutters, panels, designer parts | Carcass and load-bearing furniture |
| Rooms | Bedrooms, living rooms, dry areas | Every room, including kitchens |
What MDF is
MDF (medium density fibreboard) is wood broken down into fibres, mixed with resin and pressed flat.
Strengths
- A perfectly smooth, even surface with no grain or knots, ideal for paint, PU and duco
- Clean edges when routed, so grooves, flutes and CNC jaali come out crisp
- Usually cheaper than good plywood
Weaknesses
- Swells when water reaches it, especially at an unsealed edge
- Holds screws less firmly, especially in its edge
- Edges chip if knocked
What plywood is
Plywood is thin wood veneers glued in layers with the grain crossing, which makes it strong and stable in every direction. It comes in grades: MR for dry rooms, BWR for humidity, BWP for wet areas.
Strengths
- Excellent screw holding, so hinges and channels stay tight
- Better moisture resistance, especially in BWR and BWP
- Carries more weight and sags less over long spans
Weaknesses
- The surface has grain, so a high-end paint finish is harder; laminate or veneer suits it better
- Good plywood costs more than MDF
Strength and screw holding
Because plywood's layers cross, shelves carry more load, hinges and channels grip better, and long shelves sag less. MDF grips small screws reasonably, but under heavy load and repeated movement (heavy shutters, drawers opened daily) the screws loosen sooner.
So: carcass, wardrobe boxes, bed frames and heavy storage in plywood; designer shutters and panels in MDF.
Moisture in a Delhi home
BWR and BWP plywood clearly outperform MDF where moisture reaches the furniture: kitchen carcasses, bathroom vanities, utility units and ground-floor rooms with damp walls. Even a small exposed edge of MDF that keeps meeting water or steam can swell. Keep plain MDF in dry, protected places, and seal every edge with edge band.
Where HDHMR fits
HDHMR is a denser, moisture-resistant fibre board. It keeps MDF's smooth surface for shutters and CNC work but holds screws better and handles kitchen humidity. It's the usual choice for kitchen and wardrobe shutters today. It's moisture resistant, not waterproof, so the sink cabinet still needs BWP plywood or WPC. Read HDHMR vs plywood.
Best uses at a glance
MDF
- Grooved wardrobe shutters
- PU or duco painted doors
- CNC and fluted designs
- TV wall panels and feature walls in dry rooms
Plywood
- Kitchen and wardrobe carcasses
- Lofts and heavy-duty cabinets
- Bed boxes, study tables, shoe racks
- Any furniture standing on the floor
Cost
MDF usually costs less per sheet than plywood. But MDF in a place that needed plywood costs more in the end, in repairs and replacement. We suggest a mix: plywood where it's needed, MDF or HDHMR where the finish matters. For today's rates, call +91-9212017608.
The combination we recommend
- Kitchen: carcass in BWR plywood (BWP or WPC under the sink); shutters in HDHMR or plywood with laminate.
- Wardrobes: boxes in 18mm plywood; shutters in MDF or HDHMR with laminate or PU. See the wardrobe plywood guide.
- TV units and feature walls: frame in plywood; designer front in MDF.
