Which Board for a Home Mandir? Plywood, MDF or HDHMR, Jali, Finish and Material List

Short answer: build the frame, base and shelves of the mandir in 18mm plywood (BWR if it's on an outer or damp wall). Make the jali, carved back panel and design doors in MDF (dry room) or HDHMR (where there's moisture), 9–12mm, cut on a CNC machine. Finish in PU paint for the popular white-and-gold look, or laminate or veneer for a wood look. Keep the diya on a metal or stone plate with space above it, since flame and heat damage any board.
"Plywood ka chhota sa mandir", "प्लाईवुड का मंदिर" and "MDF sheet for mandir" are some of the most searched plywood phrases, and they peak before Diwali and Navratri.
Which board for which part
| Part | Board | Thickness | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frame, sides, top, base | Plywood (MR in a dry room, BWR on an outer wall) | 18mm | Strength, holds screws and hinges |
| Shelves for idols and items | Plywood | 18mm (12mm if short) | Brass and stone idols are heavy |
| Jali (screen) panels, carved back | MDF (dry) or HDHMR (humid) | 9–12mm | Cuts clean on CNC, takes paint smoothly |
| Design doors | MDF or HDHMR frame with jali, or plywood with laminate | 18mm frame | Flat, holds hinges |
| Drawer for diya, incense, books | Plywood | 12mm sides, 6mm bottom | |
| Back panel (plain) | Plywood | 6mm | |
| Base platform / step | Plywood or block board | 18mm | Takes weight when you lean on it |
Why MDF for jali and plywood for the frame: MDF vs plywood. HDHMR handles moisture better than MDF: HDHMR vs plywood.
About CNC cutting: jali and carved patterns are cut on a CNC machine at a cutting workshop. We don't cut boards; we supply the MDF, HDHMR and plywood, and you or your carpenter take the board to be cut.
Finish
| Finish | Look | Note |
|---|---|---|
| PU paint (white, ivory, with gold lines) | The classic mandir look; seamless | On MDF or HDHMR; needs a skilled painter |
| Laminate | Wood grain, marble print, solid colours | Hard-wearing, easy to clean |
| Veneer + polish | Real teak or walnut look | Warm, traditional |
| Acrylic | High gloss | Shows soot and fingerprints |
Comparisons: PU vs duco vs laminate.
Diya, incense and lights
- Put the diya on a metal or stone plate, never directly on the board.
- Leave at least a foot of open space above the diya; don't place a shelf right over it.
- Incense smoke darkens white PU and gloss over time; a matt finish or a granite/marble base under the diya area helps.
- Plan LED strips in grooves and the switch and wiring before the panels go up.
- Bells and heavy hanging items: fix them into the 18mm plywood frame, not into a thin jali.

Festival décor: MDF for backdrops and Ganpati sets
For temporary décor (Ganpati backdrops, Diwali panels, stage cut-outs), 6–9mm MDF cuts cleanly and paints well. It's for dry, indoor use. For outdoor or rainy setups use plywood: plywood for stages and exhibitions.
