Which Board for a TV Unit? Plywood, MDF or HDHMR, Thickness and Finish

Short answer: build the cabinet and shelves in 18mm plywood, and the back or wall panel in 9–12mm MDF or HDHMR if it has grooves, flutes or CNC designs (plywood if it's plain). MR grade is enough in a dry living room; BWR if the wall is an outer or damp one.
A TV unit has two different jobs
- Carrying weight: the base cabinet holds a set-top box, speakers and often heavy drawers; floating shelves hold devices and décor.
- Looking good: the back panel behind the TV is mostly decorative, often with grooves, flutes or lighting.
Each job suits a different board.
Part by part
| Part | Board | Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Base cabinet body | Plywood | 18mm |
| Floating shelves | Plywood or block board | 18mm (block board for long shelves) |
| Drawers | Plywood | Sides 12mm, bottoms 6mm |
| Back or wall panel (plain) | Plywood | 9–12mm on a frame |
| Back or wall panel (grooved, fluted, CNC) | MDF or HDHMR | 9–12mm |
| Frame behind the panel | Timber battens | — |
Floating shelves carry weight from one edge only, so keep them short or use thicker board; a long floating shelf in thin board sags. See block board vs plywood.
Plywood, MDF or HDHMR?
- Plywood for anything that carries weight or holds screws: the cabinet, shelves, drawers.
- MDF for designs in a dry room: grooves, flutes and CNC patterns come out clean and take paint or PU well.
- HDHMR for the same designs where the wall is an outer one or the room gets humid; it's denser and handles moisture better than MDF.

Grade
- A dry living room on an upper floor: MR plywood is enough.
- An outer wall, a ground floor, or a wall with damp: BWR, and leave a small gap behind the unit. See what commercial (MR) plywood is.
Finish
- Laminate on the cabinet and shelves: matt or wood grain hides dust and marks. Read how to choose laminate.
- Veneer and polish for a natural wood wall panel. See decorative veneer.
- High gloss or acrylic for a modern look on the front panels; it shows dust and fingerprints more. See acrylic vs laminate.
- Edge band on every visible edge.
Plan before the panel goes up
- Cable routes and sockets: decide where the TV, set-top box and speakers go, and plan openings and a cable channel before the panel is fixed.
- TV mount: the wall bracket should be fixed to the wall itself, not only to a thin panel.
- Lighting: if the panel has LED strips, plan the groove and the wiring with the electrician.
How much material?
A typical 6 ft TV unit (a base cabinet, a back panel and two floating shelves) takes about 1.5 to 2 sheets of 18mm and 1 sheet of 9mm or 12mm for the panel, depending on the design. For bigger units, try the sheet calculator or send us the drawing.
FAQ
Is MDF good for a TV unit? For the decorative back panel in a dry room, yes. For the cabinet and shelves, plywood holds screws and weight better.
What thickness of plywood for a TV unit? 18mm for the cabinet and shelves, 12mm for drawer sides, 6mm for drawer bottoms, and 9–12mm for the panel.
