Steel Almirah or Plywood Almirah? (And Is a Steel Kitchen Better?)

Short answer: a steel almirah is ready-made, moveable, strong and secure, and termites can't touch it, but it comes in fixed sizes and can rust in damp corners. A plywood wardrobe is made to fit your wall from floor to ceiling, so it stores far more in the same space, matches the room, and can be changed later. If you rent or move often, steel makes sense. If it's your own house, a plywood wardrobe usually gives better value per sq ft of wall.
Side by side
| Steel almirah | Plywood wardrobe | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Fixed sizes (e.g. 6 × 3 ft) | Made to your wall, up to the ceiling with a loft |
| Storage in the same wall | Less; gaps around it | More; uses the full wall |
| Moving house | Easy to carry | Built in; stays with the house |
| Termites | Not affected | Treated BWR plywood resists; seal edges |
| Damp | Can rust at the bottom in damp corners | BWR plywood on damp walls; keep a gap |
| Security | Strong; good locker | Good lock; less of a safe |
| Looks | Industrial; limited colours | Any laminate or finish, matches the room |
| Inside layout | Fixed shelves | Your choice: hanging, drawers, shelves, locker |
| Noise | Doors clang | Quiet |
| Repair | Hinges and locks are replaceable | Any carpenter can repair or change it |
When a steel almirah makes sense
- You rent and will move in a year or two.
- You need a locker for valuables, or a store room cupboard.
- The room has severe damp or termites you can't fix (choose rust-protected steel and keep it off the floor).
When a plywood wardrobe makes sense
- It's your own house and the wardrobe will stay for 10–20 years.
- You want to use the whole wall with a loft.
- You want it to match the bed, TV unit and room.

A middle way
Some families keep the old steel almirah for the locker and add a plywood wardrobe for clothes. Others have the carpenter build a plywood frame and shutters around a cement almirah already in the wall (the "frame" job): how carpenters charge for frame vs box.
Steel kitchens vs plywood kitchens
Stainless steel kitchen cabinets are sold as "lifetime, no termites, no water damage". That's true for the steel, but:
- They're costly and made by specialist fabricators.
- Fewer colours and finishes; dents show.
- Changing the layout later is hard.

FAQ
Which is better, a steel almirah or a wooden almirah? For renters and lockers, steel. For a made-to-fit wardrobe in your own house, plywood stores more and matches the room.
Do plywood almirahs get termites? They can if damp walls bring termites in. Use treated BWR plywood, seal the edges, keep a gap from the wall and treat the wall: termites in plywood.
Is a steel kitchen better than a plywood kitchen? Steel doesn't swell or get termites, but it costs more and limits finishes. A plywood kitchen with the right grades lasts many years.
