Which Board for a Shoe Rack? Plywood Grade, Ventilation, Size and Material List

Short answer: make a shoe rack in BWR plywood (or WPC board at the bottom if wet shoes and mopping water reach it), 18mm for the frame and 12mm for the shelves, with ventilation in the shutters (jali, slots or louvers) so damp and smell can escape. Keep it on legs or a plinth, not flat on the floor. A 4 × 3 ft shoe cabinet takes about 1 sheet of 18mm and 1 of 12mm.
Why shoe racks fail first
Shoes bring in rain water, mud and sweat. A closed box near the door, mopped around every day, is the dampest furniture in the house. That's why cheap shoe racks swell at the bottom and smell inside.

Ventilation
- Jali or perforated panels in the shutters (MDF jali in a dry hall, HDHMR or WPC where it's damp).
- Slots at the top and bottom of the back panel.
- Slanted shelves with a lip: shoes take less depth and air moves.
- A louvered shutter also works.
