Why Does New Plywood Furniture Smell? Formaldehyde, E0, E1 and E2 Explained

Short answer: most of the "new furniture" smell comes from formaldehyde in the glue (resin) that binds plywood, MDF and particle board, plus the adhesive used for laminate and any paint or PU. Boards marked E0 release the least, E1 a little more, E2 more. To cut the smell: choose E0/E1 boards where available, laminate or seal every face and edge, and air the room well for the first few weeks. The smell fades with time.

Where the smell comes from

Source When it smells How long
Resin in the board (urea-formaldehyde in MR plywood, MDF and particle board; phenol-formaldehyde in BWP) Most when new, more in heat and humidity Fades over weeks to months
Laminate adhesive During and just after pasting Days
PU, duco or polish During spraying and drying Days to a couple of weeks
Damp and fungus Musty smell, any time Until the damp is fixed

A musty smell is a damp problem, not a resin one: see fungus in wardrobes and damp walls.

What E0, E1 and E2 mean

They are emission classes: how much formaldehyde a board gives off in a standard test.

Mark Emission
E0 Lowest
E1 Low
E2 Higher

The exact limits depend on which standard the mark refers to, so ask what test the mark is based on. Not every brand prints an emission class; when it's printed, it's usually on the sheet face or in the brand's literature. Which boards release less

  • Lower-emission boards (E0, E1) of any type.
  • Fully laminated boards: laminate and edge band on every face and edge seal the board in.
  • Less board area in a small closed room: a wall-to-wall wardrobe in a small bedroom is a lot of board.

Simple ways to cut the smell

  1. Laminate both faces (liner inside), and edge-band every edge, including inside edges and the back.
  2. Air the room daily for the first few weeks: windows open, fan on, wardrobes open.
  3. Avoid heat buildup: a closed room in a Delhi summer makes new furniture smell more.
  4. Paint and PU work: keep the room ventilated during spraying and drying, and keep children out until it's dry.
  5. Kids' rooms and nurseries: plan the furniture a few weeks before the room is used: plywood for a kids' room.

FAQ

Is the smell from plywood harmful? Formaldehyde at high levels irritates the eyes, nose and throat. The smell from new furniture drops with time and ventilation. Choosing lower-emission boards and sealing them reduces it further.

How long does the new plywood smell last? Usually weeks to a few months, depending on the board, the room's ventilation and the temperature.

Is MDF worse than plywood for smell? MDF and particle board use more resin per sheet than plywood, so they can smell more when new, unless they carry a low-emission mark.

Does laminate stop the smell? It reduces it a lot when every face and edge is covered.
