Plywood for a Kids' Room: Bunk Bed, Study Table and Safe, Low-Smell Boards

Short answer: anything a child climbs, jumps on or sleeps on (a bunk bed, a loft bed, stairs with storage) should be 18mm plywood or block board, never MDF or particle board. Choose low-emission (E0 or E1) boards where you can, so the room doesn't smell of resin, and air the room well for the first weeks. Round every corner, edge-band every edge, and size the study table to the child's height.
Bunk bed or loft bed
| Part | Board | Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Side frames and posts | Plywood or block board (or timber) | 18mm, or doubled |
| Mattress platforms | Plywood or block board on battens | 18mm |
| Guard rail on the top bunk | Plywood | 18mm, at least 6 inches above the mattress top |
| Ladder or stair steps | Plywood or block board | 18mm |
| Storage under stairs or bed | Plywood | 12mm sides, 6mm backs |
Safety basics:
- Fix the bunk bed to the wall; it must not rock.
- Guard rails on all open sides of the top bunk.
- Leave enough headroom between the top mattress and the ceiling (and the ceiling fan).
- Rounded corners and edge band everywhere; no sharp laminate edges.
Study table by age
| Age | Table height (approx.) | Depth |
|---|---|---|
| 4–7 years | 20–22 inches | 1.5 ft |
| 8–12 years | 24–26 inches | 2 ft |
| 13+ years and adults | 28–30 inches | 2 ft |
Choose an adjustable chair so the table works as the child grows. A wall-mounted folding table saves space in small rooms; fix its brackets into a solid wall.
| Part | Board | Thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Table top | Plywood or block board | 18mm |
| Book shelves above | Plywood | 18mm (12mm for short spans) |
| Drawers | Plywood | 12mm sides, 6mm bottoms |
| Pinboard panel | Softboard or cork on plywood | per design |

Low-smell, low-emission boards
New plywood, MDF and particle board release small amounts of formaldehyde from the resin, which is the "new furniture" smell. Boards marked E0 or E1 release less. In a child's room:
- Ask for E0 / E1 boards where available.
- Laminate or seal every face and edge.
- Air the room well for the first few weeks; avoid closing a new wardrobe tight in a hot room.

Finish
Matt or suede laminate hides fingerprints and crayon; bright colours for shutters, neutral for the carcass so it still works when they grow up. Avoid high gloss on surfaces that get bumped. How to choose laminate.
