Why Do Wardrobe and Kitchen Shutters Bend? Which Board, Thickness and Laminate Keep Them Straight

Short answer: shutters bend mostly because of laminate on one side only, a board that's too thin, moisture through open edges or too few hinges. Use 18/19mm board, laminate outside and liner inside, edge band on all four edges, and enough hinges for the height.
Six reasons a shutter bends
When a wardrobe or kitchen shutter bows out in the middle or a corner sticks out, it's usually one of these:
| Reason | What happens |
|---|---|
| Laminate on one side only | One face takes up moisture and expands, the other doesn't, so the shutter curves |
| A thin board | A long 12mm shutter bends under its own weight and moisture |
| Moisture | Damp gets in through open edges or from a damp wall |
| A weak core or one with gaps | The sheet isn't uniform, so the tension is uneven |
| Too few hinges | A long shutter with no support in the middle bows outward |
| Sheets stored badly | Sheets left leaning before the work take that shape |
The right material keeps a shutter straight
1. Laminate on both sides (balancing)
This is the most important. 1mm laminate outside, liner laminate inside: both faces need a layer so they behave the same. Choosing laminate: how to choose laminate.
2. The right thickness
- Wardrobe and kitchen shutters: 18/19mm.
- 12mm shutters only on small cabinets.
- For a 7 ft wardrobe, a shutter plus a separate loft shutter is better than one very tall shutter.
3. Plywood or HDHMR?
- HDHMR: no grain, the whole board is uniform, so it stays flat. But it's heavy and needs more hinges.
- Plywood: lighter, with good screw holding; good calibrated, gap-free plywood also stays straight when laminated on both sides.
In detail: HDHMR vs plywood.
4. Every edge sealed
Edge band on all four edges. Open edges let moisture in, and the shutter slowly bends.
5. The right number of hinges
With too few hinges, the middle of a long shutter pushes out. The usual count: 2 up to 3 ft, 3 up to 5 ft, 4 up to 6.5 ft, 5 above that, and one more for a heavy shutter. For your shutter: the hinge and channel picker.
6. The grade for the place
At least BWR in the kitchen and against damp walls. BWP or WPC next to the sink.
When the sheets arrive
- Store sheets flat, lying down, not leaning against a wall.
- Keep them out of damp and direct sun.
- Start the work soon; sheets left for months can take up moisture and warp.
FAQ
HDHMR or BWP plywood: which bends sooner? With good material, laminate on both sides and enough hinges, both stay straight. HDHMR is better at staying flat; plywood is lighter and holds screws better.
Will a 16mm shutter do? 16–18mm shutters are common in HDHMR and MDF. For long shutters, 18mm is better.
