Which Board for a Room Partition? Plywood, MDF Jali or Block Board, by Partition Type

Short answer: for a shelf-type partition (a divider that also holds things) use 18mm plywood or block board. For a jali or CNC screen use 12–18mm MDF (dry room) or HDHMR (humid), set in an 18mm plywood or timber frame. For a full-height solid partition use a timber batten frame with 12mm plywood on both sides. Whatever the type, fix it to the floor and the ceiling or wall: a tall free-standing panel can tip over.

Fixing and safety

• A partition over 5 ft tall must be fixed at the top (ceiling or a header beam) and at the bottom (floor channel or plinth), or to a side wall.
• Tile floors: use a plinth or floor channel, not just screws in a joint.
• Don't hang heavy shelves on an MDF jali; put them in the plywood frame.

Finish

• Laminate both sides for a shelf partition (both faces are visible).
• PU paint for jali and CNC screens.
• Veneer + polish for a warm wood look on slats.
