Which Plywood for Which Job? A 20-Item List from Wardrobes to Shop Counters and DJ Boxes

The one rule to remember: two questions decide the plywood.
- What is the place like? Dry (MR), a kitchen or ground floor (BWR), or wet (BWP or WPC). This decides the grade.
- How much weight does the part carry? Load-bearing parts and anything with hinges 18/19mm, partitions and shelves 12mm, back panels 6mm. This decides the thickness.
Below are 20 common jobs. For an instant answer for your own job, use the which plywood for which job tool.

A few special jobs
| Job | Board | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Speaker or DJ box | Plywood 12–18mm, with bracing inside big boxes | A DJ box that travels needs plywood: tougher and lighter than MDF |
| Aquarium cabinet | BWP 18mm+ or WPC, with strong supports underneath | Tanks are very heavy and water spills; the carpenter should plan supports for the tank's weight |
| Door | Solid core flush door; WPC for the bathroom | In detail: which plywood for a door |
The three most common mistakes
- One grade everywhere: BWP throughout the house wastes money; MR throughout fails under the sink.
- Long shelves with no support: a shelf longer than 3 ft sags in the middle. Use block board or add a support.
- A thin top: a 12mm table or counter top soon sinks.

FAQ
Which is the strongest plywood? Strength comes from the core (a full hardwood core, such as Gurjan); water resistance comes from the grade (BWP). They're separate things.
Is it fine to use different grades in one house? Yes, that's the right way: MR in dry rooms, BWR in the kitchen, BWP or WPC at the sink and in the bathroom.
