Salon and Parlour Furniture: Which Board for Mirror Stations, Counters and Storage

Short answer: a salon has water, hair dye, chemicals and hot styling tools, so use BWR plywood for mirror stations, counters and storage, WPC or BWP around the hair-wash basin, a hard-wearing, stain-resistant laminate (matt or textured, dark or patterned to hide dye stains), and edge band on every edge. A single mirror station with a drawer unit takes about 1 sheet of 18mm and part of a 12mm.

Board by area

Area	Board	Thickness	Why
Mirror station (panel behind the mirror, shelf)	BWR plywood	18mm	Holds the mirror and lights
Drawer unit at each station	BWR plywood	18mm body, 12mm drawers	Tools and products
Reception counter	BWR plywood	18mm	Laminate or veneer front
Product display shelves	Plywood or glass	18mm (short spans)	Bottles are heavy
Hair-wash area cabinets	WPC or BWP plywood	18mm	Water every day
Storage for towels and stock	BWR plywood	18mm, 6mm back

Details

• Heat: keep a metal holder or a heat-proof pad for straighteners and dryers; laminate can mark under a hot iron.
• Stains: hair dye stains light, glossy surfaces. Choose matt, textured or darker laminate for work tops.
• Power points: plan sockets at every station before the panels go up.
• Mirror: mounted on a 12–18mm plywood backing, not a thin panel.
• Floor: raise cabinets on a plinth; floors are mopped often.

Material list: one mirror station (estimate)

Material	Quantity
18mm BWR plywood	1 sheet
12mm plywood (drawers)	part of a sheet
1mm laminate	1 sheet
Edge band	about 10 m
Drawer channels	2–3 pairs
Mirror and lights	from the glass shop and electrician

For four stations, multiply by four and add the counter and storage. Send the layout for a full list.
