Plywood, Plyboard, Block Board, Pine Board: Different Names, Same Thing?

Short answer: "plyboard" is just another name for plywood in everyday speech. Block board is a different board, with a core of solid wood strips. "Pine board" usually means pine plywood (or sometimes a solid pine plank). MDF and particle board are fibre and chip boards, not plywood at all. Ask what's inside the sheet, not what it's called.
Why the names confuse everyone
At the counter you'll hear "ply", "plyboard", "board", "pine board" and "block" used loosely. Two people can mean different sheets by the same word, and the same sheet by different words. The way through is to look at the edge: it shows how the board is built.
What each name usually means
| Name you hear | What it usually is | The edge shows |
|---|---|---|
| Plywood / ply / plyboard | Thin wood veneers glued in crossing layers | Thin layers, alternating grain |
| Block board | Solid wood strips in the core, veneers on both faces | A row of wooden strips between thin layers |
| Pine board / pine ply | Usually plywood with a pine face (light, pale) | Pine-coloured layers |
| MDF | Fine wood fibres pressed with resin | Smooth, even fibre, no layers |
| HDHMR | Denser, moisture-resistant fibre board | Smooth, dense fibre |
| Particle board | Wood chips pressed with resin | Visible chips, coarser |
How each behaves
| Plywood | Block board | MDF / HDHMR | Particle board | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screw holding | Very good, every direction | Good along the strips | Fair (MDF) to good (HDHMR) | Weak; needs special fittings |
| Long spans | Can sag without support | Stays straight | Sags | Sags |
| Moisture | BWR and BWP grades handle it | Keep dry | MDF poor; HDHMR resistant | Poor |
| Finish | Laminate or veneer | Laminate or veneer | Paint, PU, laminate | Usually pre-laminated |
| Typical use | Carcasses, kitchens, wardrobes | Long shelves, bed tops, tables | Shutters, panels, CNC | Low-cost flat-pack furniture |

Plywood or plyboard for an almirah?
They're the same thing, so the real questions are the grade and thickness:
- Body and shutters: 18/19mm, MR in a dry room, BWR on an outer wall or ground floor
- Short shelves: 12mm; long or heavy shelves: 18mm or block board
- Back: 6mm
See the wardrobe plywood guide.
Where particle board fits
Particle board is common in ready-made, flat-pack furniture because it's cheap and flat. It holds screws poorly, sags under load and swells when wet, so it isn't a good choice for a carcass, kitchen or anything carrying weight. For furniture made by a carpenter at home, plywood, block board and HDHMR are the better boards.
How to tell them apart at the shop
- Look at the edge (see the table above).
- Read the stamp: plywood carries IS 303 or IS 710, block board IS 1659, MDF IS 12406. See how to read a plywood stamp.
- Ask what's inside: "Is this plywood, block board or a fibre board? Which grade?"
- Check the bill: it should name the product, grade and thickness, not just "board".
FAQ
Is plyboard the same as plywood? Yes. "Plyboard" is an everyday name for plywood.
Pine board or plywood: which is better? "Pine board" usually means pine-faced plywood: light and economical, good for lofts and paneling. For heavy furniture, a hardwood plywood such as Gurjan holds screws better. See pine plywood.
Which is stronger, block board or plywood? Block board stays straighter over long spans; plywood holds screws better in every direction and comes in water-resistant grades. They suit different parts.
