How to Choose a Plywood Brand: Local vs Branded, and 5 Things to Check First

Short answer: there's no single "best brand". The best sheet for a job is the one with the right grade, a verifiable ISI licence, a sound core, the stated thickness and a GST bill and warranty. Check those first; then the brand matters.

"Which brand is best?" is the wrong question

Every customer asks it. But one brand has several series: MR, BWR and BWP, with different cores. So before "which brand?", ask: "which grade and which sheet for this job?"

A brand name only helps when the five things below are right.

5 things to check before the brand

1. The right grade

MR in dry rooms, BWR in kitchens and on ground floors, BWP under the sink and in bathrooms. An expensive brand in the wrong grade still fails. In detail: types and grades of plywood.

2. The ISI mark and a valid licence

Since 2025, plywood must carry the ISI mark. You can check the CM/L number on the stamp in the BIS Care app. How: how to read a plywood stamp, or the stamp checker tool.

3. The core

Look at the edge: no gaps, overlaps or patches. Full core is strong; alternate core is the budget option. See Gurjan and how to read the core.

4. Thickness and flatness

Measure with a caliper in 3–4 places; the sheet should be flat, not wavy. Take all the sheets for one job from one batch.

5. The bill and warranty

Get the brand, grade and thickness on the GST bill, and register the warranty. See how to claim warranty after laminate.

Local vs branded: the real difference

Large, well-known brands Small or local brands
ISI mark Should have it Should have it (required since 2025)
Consistency Usually more consistent batch to batch Depends on the brand; check sheet by sheet
Warranty Often a written warranty with registration Shorter or none
Price Higher Lower
When it's right Kitchens, wet areas, big jobs Dry rooms and budget work, if the ISI mark, grade and core are right

Local doesn't mean bad, and a big name doesn't mean every sheet is perfect. Check every sheet's stamp and edge either way.

"Gold", "Club", "Platinum": what are these?

They're series names, not grades. A "Gold" sheet can be MR or BWP. Always read MR, BWR or BWP and the IS number on the stamp.

Where to spend

  • Sink cabinet, bathroom, kitchen carcass: the best grade and a dependable sheet.
  • Bedroom wardrobe, bed: good MR or BWR is enough.
  • Back panels, lofts, drawer bottoms: save money here with a budget sheet.

By job: which plywood for which job.

FAQ

Which is the best plywood brand in India? There isn't one. The "best" sheet is the one with the right grade for the job, a valid ISI licence, a good core and a bill.

Should I buy local or branded plywood? For wet areas and kitchens, a dependable branded sheet; in dry rooms, a local sheet with the ISI mark and the right grade can do.
