Plywood for Packing Crates and Boxes: Thickness, Grade and Sheets per Crate

Short answer: for light to medium goods, crates are made in 9–12mm plywood on a frame of timber battens; for heavy machinery, use 18mm plywood with timber skids at the base for a forklift or pallet jack. MR (commercial) or pine plywood is enough for short, dry shipments; BWR for long storage, humid routes or open yards. A 4 × 2 × 2 ft crate takes about 1.5 sheets of 12mm plus battens.
Factories in the Narela and Bawana industrial areas pack and ship every day. Plywood crates are lighter than solid wood, don't split at the nails, and can be cut to any size.
Thickness by load
| Goods | Plywood | Frame |
|---|---|---|
| Light (parts, cartons inside, under 50 kg) | 9mm | Battens at the corners and edges |
| Medium (50–300 kg) | 12mm | Battens on all edges, cross battens on large faces |
| Heavy (machinery, over 300 kg) | 18mm | Battens plus timber skids at the base |
These are general guides; your packing engineer or buyer may set their own.
Grade
| Shipment | Grade |
|---|---|
| Short, dry, domestic | MR (commercial) or pine plywood |
| Long storage, humid route, open yard | BWR |
| Sea freight with long exposure | BWR or BWP, with sealed edges |
Export packing
International rules for wooden packaging (heat treatment or fumigation stamps) apply to solid wood. Plywood is a processed wood product and is generally not covered by those rules, which is one reason exporters use it. The timber battens and skids are solid wood, though, and may need treatment. Always confirm the current rules with your freight forwarder or buyer.
Sheets per crate (estimate)
Add up the six faces in sq ft and divide by 32 (an 8×4 ft sheet), then add about 15% for offcuts.
| Crate (L × W × H, ft) | Faces (sq ft) | 12mm sheets |
|---|---|---|
| 2 × 2 × 2 | 24 | about 1 |
| 4 × 2 × 2 | 40 | about 1.5 |
| 4 × 3 × 3 | 66 | about 2.5 |
| 6 × 4 × 4 | 128 | about 4.5 |
