Which Board for a Crockery Unit? Shelves, Glass Shutters, Lighting and Material List

Short answer: a crockery unit carries heavy, breakable loads, so make the carcass and shelves in 18mm plywood (12mm only for shelves under 2 ft), use MR plywood in a dry dining room and BWR if it's next to the kitchen or on an outer wall, and plan glass shutters in a plywood or aluminium-profile frame for the display part. A 4 ft wide × 7 ft high unit takes about 2 sheets of 18mm, 1 of 12mm and 1 of 6mm.
The usual layout
| Section | Height | Board |
|---|---|---|
| Base cabinet (closed storage, drawers for cutlery) | about 2.5–3 ft | 18mm plywood, laminate shutters |
| Counter top (serving space) | – | 18mm plywood with laminate, or a stone top |
| Display section with glass shutters | about 3 ft | 18mm sides, glass or 8–10mm toughened glass shelves |
| Top cabinet (rarely used items) | about 1 ft | 18mm plywood |
Why shelves sag, and how to stop it
A full dinner set, glass bowls and serving dishes on a 3 ft shelf is a lot of weight on a small span.
- Keep shelf spans short: 2–2.5 ft between supports for 18mm plywood.
- Use 18mm for long shelves; 12mm only for short ones.
- Glass shelves look good in the display part; use toughened glass and proper shelf supports.
- Block board sags less over long spans: block board vs plywood.
Shutters
- Glass in a frame: an 18mm plywood or HDHMR frame with glass, or an aluminium profile frame. Glass and profile frames come from a glass shop or fabricator.
- Laminated plywood or HDHMR for the base cabinet.
- Finish: wood-grain laminate or veneer for a classic look; PU for a white modern unit: PU vs duco vs laminate.
Lighting
Plan LED strips or spot lights in the display section and the wiring route before the back panel goes on. Glass shelves let light through to the shelves below.
